The date is not a marketing flourish. It is a salute.
You’ll see EST. 1775 stamped on most of our designs — under the headline, between the stars, sometimes in the corner. People assume it’s when SkivvyFit started. It’s not. It’s older than the country.
November 10, 1775. Tun Tavern, Philadelphia. The Continental Congress authorized two battalions of Marines to fight for what would become the United States. The Marine Corps was born in a bar over a beer, before there was a Constitution, before there was a flag, before there was a country to fight for. They started anyway.
That’s the date.
Why it ends up on a t-shirt.
SkivvyFit is not a Marine Corps brand. We’re not affiliated with the Department of Defense, we don’t use the EGA, and we deliberately avoid the trademarked language. What we are is a brand built on the same posture: show up before there’s a reason to, do the work before anyone tells you to, and don’t expect a parade.
Every shirt with EST. 1775 on it is a small acknowledgment that the discipline you bring to the rack — showing up Monday when nobody’s watching, hitting the same compound lifts you’ve hit a thousand times, eating the same chicken and rice — has roots. People have been doing the unglamorous work of getting hard for a long time before any of us. The date is a tip of the cap to that.
What the heritage stencil actually pulls from.
Our typography is intentionally lifted from 1960s recruiting posters and stencil cans you’d see in a quartermaster’s bay. Stardos Stencil. Heavy distress. Cream ink on military green or black, because that’s what looked right on the originals. Woodcut illustrations modeled on linocut prints from WWII bond drives.
None of it is original to us. All of it earned a place a long time before we existed. We just put it back on a shirt you’d actually want to wear.
